OFFERING PEACE IN THE HOLY LAND: THE DIPLOMACY OF THE VATICAN IN ISRAEL-PALESTINE CONFLICT

Abstrak

Isu mengenai Israel dan Palestina bukanlah barang baru. Hampir 70 tahun lebih isu ini bergulir dan masih belum adanya tanda-tanda rekonsiliasi yang abadi. Meskipun begitu, sejak tahun 1948, beberapa negara telah ikut andil dalam proses perdamaian kedua negara. Di samping aktor negara, aktor non-negara juga turut memberikan sumbangsihnya terhadap rekonsiliasi Israel-Palestina, salah satunya institusi Gereja Katolik, Tahta Suci Vatikan. Dengan statusnya yang unik, membuat Tahta Suci Vatikan memiliki gaya berdiplomasi yang sedikit berbeda. Maka dari itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat apa dan bagaimana usaha-usaha diplomasi yang dilakukan Tahta Suci dalam rekonsiliasi Israel-Palestina. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan memanfaatkan sumber data dari internet dan juga dokumen-dokumen resmi. Hasil dari penelitian ini di antaranya: (1) Tahta Suci Vatikan memainkan peranan yang sangat penting terhadap perdamaian di Tanah Suci lewat institusi keagamaan, (2) Tahta Suci Vatikan memiliki peran dalam menjembatani gesekan politik antara Israel-Palestina lewat normalisasi hubungan, (3) dan Tahta Suci memiliki peran terhadap kasus kemanusiaan lewat bantuan sosial.
